This academic year has given us many things to celebrate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MatSE) at Penn State. Here is a look back at some of the great times the MatSE family has shared during the 2023-24 academic year.

MatSE Alumna of the Year
Awarded to: Dawne M. Moffatt-Fairbanks, Ph.D.,Director, Thermal & Materials Engineering, Manufacturing Technology & Engineering,Corning Incorporated
MatSE Faculty Member of the Year
Recognizes a faculty member who displays excellence in teaching, research, advising or outreach. Nominations for this award are sent to the student advisory committee and the students choose the recipient.
Awarded to: Professor James Adair,Professor of Materials Science and Engineering,Biomedical Engineering, and Pharmacology
MatSE Staff Excellence Award
Recognizes a staff memberwho exhibits at least one of the following: excellent job skills, knowledge of departmental goals, ability to motivate others, creative problem-solving skills, takes a leadership role, dependable and efficient, professional demeanor, positive attitude, enthusiastic and dedicated in carrying out duties, cooperative and courteous interaction with others, good supervisory skills.

Outstanding Safety Award
Recognizes an undergraduate or graduate student who has gone above and beyond the high standards set by the department.

David Ford McFarland Award for Achievement in Materials
The David Ford McFarland Award for Achievement in Materials was established in 1948 by the Penn State Chapter of the American Society for Metals (now ASM International) to honor graduates of Penn State who have honorably distinguished themselves in some field of materials. The award was named in honor of Dr. David Ford McFarland—former professor and department head.
Awarded to: Melissa Marshall,Vice President – Global Audit, Risk, & Controls, Westinghouse Electric Company
Dr. David Green Materials Faculty Service Award
Established to enrich the Department of Materials Science and Engineering by recognizing a faculty member who has performed outstanding service work and provide support to faculty to further their contributions in teaching, research, and public service in MatSE.
Awarded to:Allison Beese, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, and the Associate Head for Diversity Equity, Inclusion and Belonging in MatSE. She is also the Director of the Additive Manufacturing and Design Graduate Program, and the Co-Director of the Penn State CIMP-3D.
New Awards

- Product Evaluation Systems, Inc. Scholarship in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering
- MatSE Opportunity Scholarship established by Beth and Larry Hanco*ck in loving gratitude to their parents, John Jordon and Evelyn (Jordon) Jurjevic, and Jerald and Rosemary Hanco*ck.
- Sobota Family Student Engagement Fund in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
- The laboratory naming of what is now 125 Steidle to the "Jim and Cheryl Steiner Glass Lab."

MVC16 - Materials Visualization Competition Winners
MVC is a scientific, visual, and artistic competition sponsored by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MatSE) and the Materials Research Institute (MRI). Through the creativity and visualization of our researchers, MVC celebrates the quality of research in materials at Penn State and promotes awareness of materials science.Entry is open to all Penn State undergraduates, graduates, post-docs, and faculty working on materials-related topics.
