New project - Sound Proofing, 2mm or 4mm sheets? silent coat

Hello

OK, so I am looking at something else to do while I finish the trailer, and sound proofing look a good option.

I've decided on silent coat due to reviews V costs. It seems very good. I've also ordered to stainless sill plates so with start with the front seats / pedal area.

I've narrowed my choice to make but now I find 2mm or 4mm sheets.

The 2mm bulk pack is £85 and covers 4sq meters (40 sheets 375 x 270)

The 4mm bulk pack is £80 and covers 3sq meters (30 sheets 375 x 270)

I'm going to use this in combination with a 6mm closed cell matting on top and then the original carpet on that, so I was going to go 2mm as you get more coverage for your money.

What have others used?

I'd be interested to know as well. Uming and ahing between dyna, dodo and silent. Also 2mm vs 4mm. A balance of ease of fitting versus price versus benefit.Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

I've watched and read enough to determine that Silent coat is equal to Dynamat

I've used that years ago when I was into ICE and young free and single money just went on the car... seems in the real world silent coat is as good,

I will probably go 2mm route as with a 6mm deadening foam also then the carpet it has to be slightly better than nothing?

Should be slightly easy to fit, and 8mm cover I hope should be good.

What's the deadening foam as opposed to the 2mm stuff? Why do you need both? And what's going under the headliner?Monsieur Le Grenadier

I bought 2 packs of silent coat 4mm, and did the whole of the back of my USW. It has transformed the exhaust boom which is always present in TDCi 110's to almost nothing, and significantly improved the road noise from water spray and general air movement noise.

I'm about to cover it in a high density soundproofing material black chequerplate vinyl (not the cheap stuff you buy on eBay - came from the same supplier as the soundproofing moulded mats) to finish it off and get rid of the awful bright shiny finish.

Another two packs should do the front end of it when I get round to it. Also plan to add 1-2 sheets to each door to prevent door shake.

Well worthwhile, and yes i came to the same conclusion, much better value than dynamat, same performance and function. Similar mass loading properties per £1 spent.

Hello

My idea was to put this on top of the silent coat

so 2mm Silent coat, then this

http://www.deadening.co.uk/products/silent...arge-sheet

If this is too thick for the headlining then just the silent coat, is this over kill?

Good demo of silent coat here

I've used silent coat and went with the 2mm which was really nice and easy to work with and did a great job of stopping the resonance. I topped it off with closed cell foam and then one of the LR heavy rubber load area mats.

Good stuff

I've used the 2mm stuff and put it pretty much edge to edge over the panels it's on.

The side panels have gone from a tinny twang noise if you hit them to a dull thud so I reckon it's done its job of stopping the resonance. The wheel arch boxes are also done, but you do still get lots of sloshing noises when driving along wet roads so that's less good. I guess that's to be expected really.

I'm going to go with this stuff as well. Assume the 4mm stuff will work better and provide an element of sound deadening and vibration reduction. I plan to use the 4mm where I can and the 2mm for places that can't be that thick. Unless someone tells me there is no benefit to having the 4mm stuff. What are people using for the sound deadening layer? Just drive 1.5 hrs with no coverage at all to the inside of the landy as all stripped out as was deafening ride for all concerned!

Just contacted Deadening.co.uk and they have a deal on dodomat at the moment. They recommend 3 packs for an SW and 2 for a DC so I suppose the same for a 90....

Is that instead of Silent coat?

Notice its 2.2mm against 2mm not much but its thicker....

Also covers 3.5sq meters so £ per cover its cheapest.

How many rolls for a 110 SW ?

Good find, will see if I can find reviews.

I went with some 2mm silent coat butyl stuff and an over layer of their Dodo sound deadening foam.

Here's the foam about to go down: DEFENDER2.NET - View topic - New project (109)

For the rear fold down seat mountings that would go where the foam was I needed a spacer - I was recommended a type of plastic, which I can't remember the name of.... But it worked! DEFENDER2.NET - View topic - New project (110)

....

It's the 3 together that make it work - the butyl stops resonance and panel vibration, the foam filters certain frequencies of sound, as does a dense heavy rubber / MLV top layer.

So for example when I did the seat box I didn't go with the butyl layer as it didn't seem to drum much at all: so I have foam with the standard LR heavy vinyl seatbox cover on that - which worked really well.
