German Likes and Dislikes Lesson Plan (2024)

German Likes and Dislikes Lesson Plan (1)

Learning Objective

Express Likes and Dislikes

Success Criteria

I can say what I like and don’t like

I can say what I prefer

I can say what I like the best

I can do this with colours, clothes, animals, food, drink and school subjects

Lesson Context

This is the children'sfirst lesson specifically on Likes/Dislikes, although they have come across mag (and mögen) and gern in previous lessons. The children will learn how to say what they like, what they prefer and what they like the best. They will also learn to say what they don't like and what they really don't like. All of this will be related to vocabulary they already know such as colours, clothes, animals, food, drink and school subjects. The lesson will help to prepare the children for their upcoming written work in the 'Letter to a penpal' lessons

Resources

Powerpoint presentation

'Book and School' Flashcards for the starter activity

*Hand outs which the children can take home for revision - front and back

A cuddly toy for the children to throw around the classroom

*I have put 4 vocabulary sheets from previous lessons in a zip file at the bottom of the page. Shrink them so they are quarter size and then they all go on the back of today's hand out

Slide2- Main Introduction

Communicate LO and SC

Slide 3 - Starter activity- Das Kartenspiel - revision of'Book' and'School'vocabulary

Explain that the childrenshould be using the 'Lob' words on slide 3 and let them get on with it. Reward children for using the 'Lob' words. The school subjectvocabularywill be useful in today'slesson.

Slides4 - Likes and Dislikes

Go through the vocabulary on the slide with the children. Point out that for the 'likes',they simply say'Ich mag'followed bywhat they like - and then extra words if they want to say what they prefer or what they like the best. For dislikes, they simply say 'Ich mag' again, but they throw 'nicht' to the end

Slides 5 - 17 Colours

Quickly go through the colours with the children (they should know them by now). Stop on some of the slides and ask the children some translation questions, such as:

I like red

but I prefer green

and I like blue the best

I don't like grey

and I really don't like brown

Slide 18 - Likes and Dislikes (same as slide 4)

Just as you modelled when going through the colours, get the children to talk to their partners for a few minutes about colours. This slide is on their hand outs to help them. After a few minutes randomly select and reward children who are able to say 5 sentences about what colours they like and don't like

Slide 19 - Turn Toss

Throw 'der Frosch' (or any cuddly toy) to a child - that child has to say a sentence about what they like (sentence 1 from slide 18). The next child has to use sentence 2 (aber ich mag ... lieber). The next child - sentence 3 - etc. After sentence 5, the next child goes back to sentence 1. This is a test of the children'slistening and speaking skills.

Slides20 - 39 - Wer wird Millionär?

'Zusammen' activity. Children to work with a partner using a wipe board and penand 'who wants a be a millionaire' style slides:

  • Say the English and bring up the four possible German answers
  • The children work together quietly to write thecorrect letter on their wipe boards - A, B, C or D
  • After the time limit the children reveal their answers simultaneously
  • Repeat for the next question

*Extension - Get the children to write the German before any of the options appear.

*Note - I feel it helps learning to let the children have a 'break' after question 3 so that they can look and learn from their sheets. Go back to the quiz after 2 minutes'break'.

Slide 40 - Fill in the blanks and make your own sentences

Using their hand outs, get the children to fill in the blanks about what clothes and animals they like and don't like. Any vocabulary they need will be on the back of their sheets

Following the same 5 sentence format, now get the children to write similar sentences about food, drink and school subjects. After a while get some children to read out their sentences and reward them appropriately

Assessment and Evidence

Observe and ask questions

Refer back to the learning objective and success criteriaafter the'make your own sentences' activity.

Check achievement of thesuccess criteria when you are on slide41 by questioning and rewarding randomly selected children (using lollipop sticks)

*The 4 vocabulary sheets fromthe zip fileshould be made small and then all goon the back of today's hand out
