Barn Owl at Peninsula Humane Society's Wildlife Care Center

#WildlifeWednesday! This week’s wildlife success story is a beautiful native Barn Owl! She was found stranded on the ground, weak and unable to even stand. We not are certain what happened to cause her perilous condition, but we suspect she might have crashed into a window. She was severely dehydrated and unable to fly. After a few weeks in our care, the bird perked up and began to fly like an owl champ. She’s now fully recovered from her injuries and is heading back to the wild where she belongs! Here she is stretching her wings in our Wildlife Care Center’s secure outdoor aviary!

Red-tailed hawk returned to the wild

#WildlifeWednesday! Another beautiful native raptor rehabilitated and returned to the wild! This Red-Tailed Hawk did more than just strike a window. He ended up flying through a window, shattering the glass! The hawk had glass in his chest, and an injury to one of his talons. Poor guy! But with some supportive care and medicine at our Wildlife Care Center, he was back in tip top shape and was released to the wild.

Yellow-Rumped Warbler returned to the wild

#WildlifeWednesday! It’s not every day that we rescue a wild animal on our own property! This Yellow-Rumped Warbler ended up flying into one of the windows at our Center for Compassion in Burlingame. We rushed out to scoop her up and brought her directly to our Wildlife Care Center. The bird spent two days in our shelter receiving supportive care and anti-inflammatory medicine. Under our care she rebounded quickly and was released on our property yesterday!

Western Screech Owl returned to the wild

#WildlifeWednesday! A very happy outcome for this Western Screech Owl who had been in our care since November 13, 2021!When he arrived, he was badly dehydrated and was suffering from a severely injured and infected left eye. Due to his condition, we were concerned he would succumb to his injuries. However, he started to respond to our treatment regime which included treating his infected eye three times a day. Finally, the infection was brought under control, but he is sight impaired in his left eye. Fortunately, owls are expert hunters and they are able to hunt with one good eye, so this lucky bird was returned to the wild last night!

Skunk enrichment

#WildlifeWednesday! Part of our rehabilitation process is to provide enrichment to the animals in our care that is similar to what they might encounter in the wild.We provided an enrichment bin for two skunks currently at our Wildlife Care Center complete with dirt, plant materials and mealworms. This helps hone their digging and searching skills that will come in handy once they’re returned to the wild.As you can see, these skunks love the enrichment bin and finding the tasty mealworm treats.

Baby Opossums

#WildlifeWednesday! We are currently caring for these orphaned baby opossums, whose mother sadly was struck and killed by a vehicle. We’ll take care of these little ones until they are old enough to survive on their own and then we will release them back to the wild.

Juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk returned to the wild

#WildlifeWednesday! Just listen to the sounds of happiness this juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk is making after being released to the wild a few days ago! The bird arrived at our Wildlife Care Center weak and dehydrated. After some supportive care from our staff and volunteers, she regained her strength and was ready to go back to her home in the wild.

Young Acorn Woodpecker

#WildlifeWednesday! This young Acorn Woodpecker fell from his nest that had been high up in a tree. Poor little one sustained some injuries from the impact, but thankfully with some supportive care, and lots of yummy mealworms he’s doing much better. Once fully recovered, he’ll be returned to the wild.
